Abstract

Observations made in the epicentral coastal region of the September 19th (Ms = 8.1) and 20th (Ms = 7.5) Mexican earthquakes, between Tizupan beach, Michoacan and Zihuatanejo, Guerrero (approximately 180 km), permitted to establish with reasonable certainty the uplift of the coast as a direct consequence of the earthquakes. In the absence of tidal gauges in the area, the uplift was measured by comparing the difference between the level of the horizontal white band marked on rocky beaches by dead sessile organisms pushed up from its habitat and its normal level before the earthquakes, these organisms are constituted chiefly by barnacles Chthamalus fissus Darwin and coraline algae, which grow at the high tide sea level and splash zone, respectively...
